Referees

AR Information

Spartan FC Assistant Referees (ARs, or "linesmen") must be trained and certified by the Illinois State Referee Committee. The Illinois Youth Soccer Association maintains a website with information on training clinics that all AR's must take annually to remain certified. The IYSA regulates AR requirements, and one-day recertification clinics must be taken each year.

Check the Illinois Soccer Referee Committee website for more information and clinic schedules.  A variety of classes are offered in the northern suburbs; Spartan FC tries to schedule a local class each winter, but any Grade 12 class or higher qualifies students to work as ARs.

Note that ARs must be 12 years of age to work for Spartan FC.  ARs under the age of 16 must have a work permit. In general, the following items must be presented to the administration of your Junior High School in order for them to process a work permit:

  • Letter from Spartan FC (sent to you in email)
  • Proof of age
  • Approval from a doctor
  • Permission from parents

Spartan FC can provide each AR with a letter stating that you intend to work for us. That letter will serve as the required employer documentation that you need to provide to the school. (Please insert your child's name where indicated in the Word document.) If you need a copy of the letter or if you have any questions, please send an email to referee@spartanfc.org. Note that the actual work permit requirements vary by school district.

Specific requirements for each district can be found by following the links below, or contact your school directly.

Spartan FC pays $20 for U11 and U12 games, $22.50 for U13 and U14 games, and $25.00 for U15 and older games worked. If we use ARs for U10 or younger games, we will pay $17.50.
